Graphic Design Class: T-shirt Design

For the purposes of our class, T-shirts provide a blank canvas for our graphic design creations. But first, a brief history on the T-shirt…

Inexpensive and easy to clean, cotton shirts with no buttons were first issued as undergarments for soldiers in the Spanish/American war and for US Naval officers in World War I.

By the 1950’s, T-shirts, as they became known, were popular attire for workers on farms and in factories, as well as for individuals performing chores at home.

But by the 1960’s, T-shirts became an important method of displaying brand and self expression… from company logos, like Disney’s Mickey Mouse, to famous graphic design like “the happy face” (by Harvey Ball) and “I ♥ NY” (by Milton Glaser).
