Ezra Academy Graphic Design
Our mission this semester is to learn the fundamentals of design, and create some cool stuff in the process.
Everything that is not made by nature is designed by someone. EVERYTHING! Packaging, furniture, posters, buildings, street signs, book covers, everything. Our class will explore elements that are essential to successful design, including but not limited to:
- form
- scale
- juxtaposition
- light and dark
- direction (vertical, horizontal, diagonal)
- image quality
- color, line, and pattern
- typography
- shape
- cropping
- content
- concept
Based on your interests, we will employ these design principles as we create collages, logos, and T-shirt designs. For each of these projects, we will research, brainstorm, plan, sketch, experiment, and create!
Please understand that research is one of the most important steps involved in design, so use the links and resources provided on this website to get you started… but design research can, and should, be done offline as well! Pay attention to everything you see in your daily lives. Billboards, graffiti, movie posters, nature, colors, etc. Mentally “collect” images in your head. Collect images you find appealing, but also collect images you don’t like at all (you can avoid making the same design mistakes if you know what you don’t like).
As with research, some of our projects will be created on computers, but some will not. In fact, most projects will employ computers and scissors and paper, and then computers again, and then maybe some photography, then computers again… we will customize our medium to best solve the design project as it evolves.
Check out the links in the sidebar to get your brain thinking about design, and refer to them as we work on projects this semester.
